CarMax wil open on Carlisle Pike in May

CarMax has announced that it will open on the Carlisle Pike in May. CarMax Inc. which claims to be the nation’s largest retailer of used cars is opening its third location in Pennsylvania in Silver Spring Twp. CarMax will open at 6555 Carlisle Pike in May. The new store is more than 20,000-square-feet. The company buys and sells used cars. CarMax has a nationwide transfer service where customers can search the company’s inventory of thousands of cars across the country and can have the car of their choice sent to their local CarMax for purchase. The company says that one in three customers use the transfer service. Eileen Cokenias was named general manager of the new location. In 2008, CarMax began looking into setting up shop on the Carlisle Pike. CarMax had received approvals for two conditional use permits and one zoning variance it had requested from Silver Spring Twp. but no formal development plan was ever submitted. In 2009, CarMax said it was unable to complete the plan approval process prior to the expiration of its contract to purchase the site. Within a couple years CarMax was again interested in opening up on the Carlisle Pike. In February of 2012, the Silver Spring Twp. supervisors granted CarMax a permit for an auto dealership. The CarMax dealership is the first of six dealerships that will open on the Carlisle Pike. Faulkner Automobile Dealership is planning to develop a 14.51-acre tract of land for four car dealerships located at the southeast intersection of Carlisle Pike and Commerce Drive. Two of the new dealerships will be Fiat and Cadillac and the other two are still under confidentiality agreements. Faulkner also purchased the former Sutliff Cadillac dealership across the street, with plans for a fifth dealership there in the near future.
