Join us for a wonderful evening featuring former Indianapolis Mayor (R), and retired Marine, Greg Ballard talking about his recent book, “Less Oil or More Caskets – The National Security Argument for Moving Away from Oil.” Joining the discussion will be renowned climate expert, PennFuture Board Member and Penn State professor Michael E. Mann, who will provide a perspective on the book’s global climate implications. We anticipate an engaging discussion that will appeal to a wide audience interested in environmental and defense issues, regardless of political affiliation.
As Mayor, Ballard created the city’s first Office of Sustainability. His community-wide plan focused on taking local action to be more environmentally conscious. Indianapolis became the first major city in the U.S. to commit to the conversion of its entire municipal non-police fleet to electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Mann is director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State and has contributed to the scientific understanding of historic climate change based on the temperature record of the past thousand years. He is frequently a guest on national news programs and was most recently interviewed on CNN, NPR, Newsweek, and the Washington Post. He received 2019 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.
