OSHA Roundtable

September 15, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 12:15 pm

Accident Investigation; New Rules for Walking and Working Surfaces; Material Safety Handling and Struck-By Precautions (Forklifts)—with OSHA now allowing companies sometimes to do accident investigations themselves, there are more responsibilities on companies and their safety committees. At the same time, new Walking and Working Surface rules from January caught companies off-guard and created confusion. And an increasing number of injuries reported to OSHA Harrisburg deals with material handling and struck-by incidents, such as falling material or employees crushed between a stack and a forklift.

Covering all these topics for safety professionals that need the most up to date information, OSHA Compliance Assistance Specialists, Safety Training Specialists from the PA Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, and top workplace safety field advisors will walk you through the latest updates, explain details on the rules and offer practical, sound advice for your company’s safety program:

  • Accident Investigation, Reporting and Prevention—OSHA encourages employers to investigate all incidents in which a worker was hurt, as well as close calls—and in some cases, allows the company to do an accident investigation itself. We will discuss investigations that emphasize identifying and correcting root causes, not finding fault or blame. This approach—nearly always involving equipment, procedural, training and other safety program deficiencies—helps improve workplace morale, increases productivity and demonstrates an employer’s commitment to a safe and healthful workplace.
  • New Walking and Working Surface rules—because the new regulations that went into effect in January were passed so quickly, many companies were caught off-guard. OSHA reports that companies are confused and has asked us to bring this topic back. Presented by preeminent slip and fall specialist and certified tribometrist Steve High, we will cover the top mistakes companies are making in complying with the new rules, with the correct solutions. Steve is often called upon to evaluate surfaces for slip-resistance performance, and serves as a legal expert witness in slip, trip and fall cases. He is on the American Society of Testing and Materials’ F-13 Committee on walking surface safety.
  • Material Safety Handling and Struck-By Precautions (Forklifts)—we are covering an increasing, and one of the more common, causes of injury and death in the central Pennsylvania area: employees struck by objects such as large falling stacks, or employees crushed between a stack and a forklift. The presenter comes highly recommended by OSHA and is a top expert on Material Safety Handling.
