Back to list June 20, 2018 CAEDC Looking to Develop Sports Complex in Cumberland Valley CUMBERLAND VALLEY, PA (June 19, 2018) – Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation (CAEDC) is currently looking to develop a sports complex in Cumberland Valley after conducting a youth sports market and complex feasibility study with Victus Advisors in 2017. CAEDC contracted Victus Advisors to complete the study to better understand the youth sports market and how CAEDC could capitalize on the emerging market and also quantify the potential and current demand for a facility in our county. Victus Advisors conducted extensive research of local and regional facilities, as well as, one-on-one interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders and potential users. The research also included surveys with the Cumberland County amateur sports community. The goals of the study were to: Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the local Cumberland Valley sports market Assess the strengths and weaknesses of Cumberland Valley as a regional sports tourism destination Identify and recommend potential improvements to Cumberland Valley’s current facility and venue inventory Recommend the type and location for sports venue development in Cumberland Valley Estimate the potential economic and fiscal impacts of sports venue development After conducting their research, Victus recommended the need for a multi-purpose facility with 8 indoor and 8 outdoor courts/fields that could be used for basketball, volleyball, soccer and lacrosse. Victus did not recommend placing a focus on new baseball and softball fields, and instead recommended enhancing our existing fields to be more attractive for tournaments. CAEDC also plans to look into adding a fitness center, rock climbing wall and a sports health and technology center, as well as, an adjacent hotel and restaurant/brewery to accommodate families who would be visiting the complex. Since the study, CAEDC has continued to meet with stakeholders to find partners and a location for a potential sports complex. CAEDC conducted site feasibility studies and is currently looking at a location, that is already zoned correctly, in South Middleton Township. CAEDC’s goal for the complex is to develop the infrastructure to support and attract sporting tournaments and training camps that create overnight stays. The next steps are to find partners and develop a funding and management strategy, and then attract amenities to support the youth sports market. CAEDC will also be building relationships with key municipalities, lodging partners that host teams, and existing sports complexes and associations.
