Wild Birds Unlimited Coming to Silver Creek Plaza on the Pike in Fall 2016

Mechanicsburg, PA (April 25, 2016) – Richard E. Jordan II, CEO/COB, of Smith Land & Improvement Corporation, announced today that the second Wild Birds Unlimited location in central Pennsylvania will join the Silver Creek Plaza on the Pike retail family in the fall of 2016. Situated between Domino’s Pizza and Weight Watchers, Wild Birds Unlimited is a leader in the backyard bird feeding industry.

Franchise owners Ed and Grace Valentine, who opened a Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop in Lancaster on October 1, 2014, are excited to bring their bird enthusiasm to Cumberland County. “We have always enjoyed the hobby of backyard bird feeding and were customers of the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Bucks County for over 20 years. We continue to be impressed with the quality of the bird food, feeders, unique pole system, and bird feeding products,” says Grace Valentine.

“Balancing national anchors with local entrepreneurs has been our tenanting model for the past 55 years, and we’re happy to introduce Wild Birds Unlimited to our shoppers,” says Jordan II, owner of Silver Creek Plaza on the Pike. “With a reputation for customer service and a passion for birds and nature, they are providing a unique complement to our existing stores. Our shoppers will benefit from our full range of retail opportunities.”

When asked why the Valentines chose Hampden Township, they replied, “Our Lancaster store was so well received that we exceeded our growth expectations and noticed that many of our customers were traveling from Cumberland and Dauphin counties to purchase our products. With so many people willing to drive almost an hour to shop for our bird feeding supplies, it was clear that Cumberland County was ready for its own Wild Birds Unlimited store,” says Grace. No strangers to the region, Ed Valentine was a Cumberland Valley High School graduate, and Grace was a Mechanicsburg High School graduate.

The Carlisle Pike corridor is a high-traffic shopping destination and Silver Creek Plaza is ideally located with great street visibility and easy access from all parts of Cumberland County, as well as surrounding counties.

“Smith Land & Improvement Corporation has been great to work with, and they take a sincere interest in their tenants’ ongoing success. As a locally owned and operated business, we appreciate the personal attention and sincerity provided by Richard E. Jordan II and Richard E. Jordan III,” says Ed.

Build-out for the 1,740 SF store is underway and the store is slated to open in September 2016. Fans can track the progress and learn more about Wild Birds Unlimited by visiting the store website at www.MECHANICSBURG.wbu.com.

As a family owned and operated business, getting to know their customers is by far the owners’ greatest reward. “We love working with our customers, growing our business, educating communities and families on the wonderful opportunities to turn their backyards into bird feeding habitats, and reaping the rewards of our hard work,” says Grace, a Registered Nurse. “It’s truly a hobby turned passion turned business for us,” says Ed, who spent 37 years in the corporate world.

The Valentines’ son-in-law, Dan Hinnebusch, is an Ornithologist and will be a full-time manager working in both stores. In addition to products and information provided by Certified Birdfeeding Specialists, the Silver Creek Plaza on the Pike store will offer monthly in-store seminars and bird walks. They will also provide off-site community presentations and support many wildlife organizations.

The Valentines are currently hiring for Assistant Manager and multiple Sales Associates positions. “As a local employer, we pride ourselves on providing good compensation, an extensive training program, and a rewarding work environment,” says Ed.
