The Carlisle Pumptrack is Cumberland Valley’s latest addition to its outdoor recreation offerings. Set in Valley Meadows Park on the outskirts of downtown Carlisle, this exciting new amenity results from a passionate effort led by Cumberland Youth Cycling Development (CYCD), a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. The creation of the pumptrack exemplifies the power of community partnerships and dedication.
A Community Effort
The Carlisle Pumptrack became a reality thanks to CYCD’s enthusiasm, combined with generous support from the Borough of Carlisle, the Cumberland Area Economic Corporation (CAEDC), the Partnership for Better Health, and numerous local businesses and volunteers. This collaborative effort has brought a regionally significant attraction to the area, providing a unique space for cyclists of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.
CAEDC’s Vital Contribution
Initially projected to cost $250,000, the project faced several years of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, subsequently increasing overall expenses. Recognizing the project’s value, CAEDC awarded $100,000 through the Tourism Product Development grant. This crucial funding covered the costs of design & engineering services and construction, ensuring the project’s successful completion.
Jonathan Cox, Jr., a representative of CYCD, expressed his gratitude: “Thank you so much for your belief in the Carlisle Pumptrack. It wouldn’t be a reality without CAEDC’s vision and support. We have enjoyed working with you to develop a new community asset in Cumberland Valley through cycling, and we hope to further this mission with you in the future.”
What is a Pumptrack?
A pumptrack is a self-contained bicycle circuit designed with banked turns and undulating mounds of dirt. It offers riders of all skill levels a chance to improve their bike-handling skills and cardiovascular fitness—all while having fun! The track’s design allows riders to generate momentum through a pumping motion, making it a unique and engaging experience.

Making its debut in early August 2024 with almost 150 enthusiastic and supportive community members, the pumptrack already looks to be a huge success.
