Back to list June 11, 2014 Georgia Pacific Selects Cumberland County Location for Distribution Facility Cumberland County officials say Georgia Pacific, maker of pulp and paper products, has selected a site outside Shippensburg for a new distribution facility. The company considered two sites for a facility that would create about 50 jobs. The Cumberland Area Economic Development Corp. learned this morning that Georgia Pacific selected the ProLogis Park in Southampton Township, near Exit 29, said Jonathan Bowser, executive director at CAEDC. CAEDC is among those asking the Shippensburg Area School Board to consider a Local Economic Revitalization Tax Abatement (LERTA) incentive for the company. Officials will appear before the school board Monday night, Bowser said. The site needs a lot of traffic infrastructure improvements, he added, so the LERTA makes sense. Georgia Pacific reportedly wants to build a 1.5 million-square-foot distribution facility. “This can be fixed, but it would be a significant cost to make the necessary improvements to the I-81 bridge, northbound ramp, and widening of 81 in that immediate area,” Bowser said last month. Estimated costs for the improvements range from $25 million to $40 million, he added. The current taxes at the Exit 29 site are approximately $35,000. At full build-out, taxes will increase to approximately $1 million, Bowser said, of which $700,000 would go to the school district. The Franklin County Area Development Corp. lobbied George Pacific to select the United Business Park in Southampton Township, Franklin County, near Exit 24.
