Midway Bowl: A Local Legacy Reinvented for Today’s Visitors

September 16, 2026 ·Small Business, Tourism

For generations, Midway Bowl has been a gathering spot for the Cumberland Valley community, whether for league nights, birthday parties, or a relaxing evening out. Founded in 1956, this locally owned Carlisle business has successfully blended tradition and innovation, offering a nostalgic bowling experience paired with modern amenities.

Today, Midway continues to grow as a lively entertainment destination, blending bowling, axe throwing, arcade games, dining, and an outdoor patio that attracts both locals and visitors.

Strengthening a Community Anchor

Like many in the hospitality and entertainment industry, Midway Bowl faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporary closures, reduced capacity, and shifts in consumer behavior disrupted operations and delayed planned improvements.

Yet, through resilience and innovation, Midway adapted by implementing enhanced safety protocols, reimagining the guest experience, and accelerating plans to modernize its facility. These efforts not only stabilized the business but also laid the groundwork for future growth and enhanced tourism appeal.

Investing in the Visitor Experience

With support from the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation (CAEDC), Midway Bowl has taken the next step in its evolution.

A $133,709 Tourism Product Development Grant helped fund a series of impactful upgrades, including new windows, ADA-accessible features, enhanced lane seating, upgraded party spaces, and expanded outdoor amenities such as shaded seating, a pergola, and entertainment options.

These improvements build on more than $100,000 in prior CAEDC investments, enabling Midway to continue enhancing its facility and to meet today’s visitors’ expectations.

The result is a more welcoming, accessible, and flexible space that accommodates everything from family outings to tournaments, group events, and community gatherings.

Driving Tourism and Economic Impact

Over the past two years, Midway Bowl has welcomed more than 5,000 out-of-town visitors, reaffirming its role as a regional draw for leisure and group travel.

With expanded and improved indoor and outdoor spaces, Midway now offers an enhanced visitor experience that promotes overnight stays, local spending, and the overall vitality of Cumberland Valley’s tourism economy.

A Destination for Residents and Visitors Alike

Beyond tourism, Midway Bowl remains deeply rooted in the community, hosting nonprofit fundraisers, league play, and themed events that bring people together year-round. Its ability to serve both locals and visitors makes it a true cornerstone of Carlisle’s recreation and entertainment scene.

Looking Ahead

Through CAEDC’s ongoing partnership, Midway Bowl is not only safeguarding its legacy but also expanding it, ensuring it remains a lively destination for future generations.

“The support from the CAEDC grant program has been instrumental in our efforts to preserve and improve Midway for generations to come. Without this partnership, the necessary upgrades to our infrastructure would have been significantly more difficult to achieve,” said Dan Mowery, owner.

As Midway Bowl continues to grow, it demonstrates how strategic investment in local businesses can improve quality of life, strengthen community bonds, and position Cumberland Valley as a welcoming destination.
