Ark Fitness: Building Strength, Community, and Opportunity in Mechanicsburg

May 8, 2026 ·Small Business

When Noah and Hannah Snyder opened Ark Fitness in August 2022, they weren’t just launching a gym. They were creating a space rooted in purpose, community, and reinvestment, a concept embodied in its name: Accountability, Respect, and Knowledge (ARK).

After stepping away from corporate America and navigating a failed business acquisition, Noah Snyder faced a pivotal decision: return to a traditional career path or take a risk by building something new. He chose the latter, collaborating with key partners to make the dream a reality. John Neifert, owner of Babineau Opticians, became the first investor and believer in the vision. He also partnered with Brock Waluk, owner of Next Generation Personal Training, to run the training organization within Ark. Perhaps one of the most important components was the partnership with Scott Curren of Curren Furniture, who gave ARK space in his building, laying the foundation for its community. This team grounded the concept in a simple yet powerful idea that sets the business apart from chain gyms: a fitness community where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to improve their lives.

That vision has resonated. By early 2024, Ark Fitness had grown from a 13,000-square-foot facility to more than 20,000 square feet, expanding into an adjacent space to meet rising demand. Membership has surged to more than 2,200, far exceeding initial expectations, and the business reached profitability within its first 18 months.

A key catalyst for that growth was a $45,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered by the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation (CAEDC) in the summer of 2023. The funding enabled Ark Fitness to invest in high-quality PRIME Fitness strength-training equipment made in the USA, giving members access to equipment designed to meet them at every stage of their fitness journey. When the new equipment was installed in the expanded space in July 2024, the impact was immediate.

“It completely changed the dynamic of our business,” Snyder said. “We were growing quickly, but we needed to expand to properly serve our members.”

Ark Fitness features one of the largest selections of PRIME Fitness equipment in Pennsylvania, positioning it as a regional destination for fitness enthusiasts.

Today, the locally owned and independently operated club offers a full-service fitness experience focused on comfort and performance. Members enjoy a clean, welcoming environment with a spacious layout that accommodates both individual workouts and guided sessions through Next Generation Personal Training. The facility now features one of the largest selections of premium strength equipment in Pennsylvania, making it a regional destination for fitness enthusiasts.

Beyond the workout floor, Ark Fitness enhances the member experience with amenities such as a full-service smoothie bar and coffee lounge, where members can refuel, connect, and unwind before or after workouts. A team of experienced, supportive staff and trainers further elevates the experience by offering personalized guidance and fostering a culture of encouragement and accountability.

But for Snyder, success isn’t measured in square footage or membership totals.

“Our entire premise is that when people walk in, they feel seen,” he said. “We get to know people and the reason they’re here. They become like family.”

That sense of belonging has become a defining characteristic of Ark Fitness. Members are greeted by name, supported by staff, and connected to a larger network that extends beyond workouts. It’s a model that prioritizes relationships as much as results and has changed lives.

Snyder recalls a member who joined as a last resort, unsure whether he could commit to a fitness routine. With support from trainers and encouragement from the community, he lost more than 100 pounds in a year and credits the gym with helping him turn his health around at a critical moment.

Stories like that underscore the deeper impact of Ark Fitness, not just as a business, but as a community asset.

That commitment to community runs throughout the business. Since opening, Ark Fitness has helped raise significant charitable contributions, including $23,400 for the local nonprofit One80 Ministries through a charity golf tournament in September 2025. The team is also developing the Ark Community Alliance, an initiative launching in partnership with Mechanicsburg Borough to connect members with volunteer opportunities and local service projects, from neighborhood clean-ups to support for area nonprofits.

“We believe we have an obligation to be good stewards of our members’ dollars,” Snyder said. “That means continuing to reinvest in both our facility and our community.”

Like many small businesses, Ark Fitness has faced challenges, particularly in securing financing and maintaining a fully staffed team across all hours in a service-oriented industry. But through creative partnerships and a commitment to a fully staffed, high-touch model, the business has continued to grow while creating local jobs and opportunities.

Support from CAEDC has played a key role in that trajectory.

“Without that support and CAEDC seeing the value in investing in us, we would not have been able to essentially double our business,” Snyder said. “It allowed us to expand our impact.”

Looking ahead, Ark Fitness shows no signs of slowing down. Snyder is exploring the acquisition of the existing facility to secure long-term stability and is preparing to open a second location. The focus remains on continuous improvement and on finding new ways to make a difference in the lives of members and the broader community.

As Ark Fitness grows, its foundation remains unchanged: accountability in helping members reach their goals, respect for every individual who walks through the doors, and the knowledge to support lasting change. It is not just a place where people work out, it is a place where they belong.
