Destination Sales Grant Brings Big 33 to Cumberland Valley

May 21, 2025 ·Tourism

In 2023, CAEDC announced the creation of a Destination Sales Grant designed to bring larger events to Cumberland County. The Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association (PSFCA) Big 33 Football was the grant’s first recipient, receiving $300,000 to relocate its showcase game from Harrisburg to Mechanicsburg in May 2024. Big 33 is widely recognized as one of the premier high school football all-star events in the nation.

Now in the second year of a three-year commitment, CAEDC again welcomes players, coaches, referees, cheerleaders, and their families from across Pennsylvania and Maryland to Cumberland Valley High School’s Chapman Field as part of the 68th Big 33 Football Classic presented by Renewal by Andersen of Central PA. Following last year’s groundbreaking debut, the 2nd Annual Big 33 Girls Flag Football Tournament will also be held during the weekend.

In 2025, the event officially begins on Wednesday, May 21, and concludes on Sunday, May 25. In addition to the Big 33 game, the four-day event also highlights the beloved Big 33 Buddy Program, pairing special needs individuals with Big 33 players and cheerleaders. Buddies take part in team bonding, pre-game activities, and the half-time performance.

A free pre-game Fan Fest features exciting activities for all ages, followed by the Big 33 Pre-Game Ceremonies and Military Recognition, honoring those who have served our country.

Thanks to the Destination Sales Grant provided by CAEDC, the practices, pre-game events, and the highly anticipated Big 33 Classic Football Game provide visitors from beyond the region with an opportunity to create unforgettable memories in Cumberland Valley. In return, they support our local businesses and generate room nights at area lodging properties.

“This generous support will allow the Football Classic to become established in Cumberland County, where we are excited to use the first-class facilities at Cumberland Valley High School, as well as support other venues and businesses in Cumberland County. We are truly thankful for such a warm welcome from CAEDC & Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau, and we are excited to continue to grow and reach new heights through this partnership,”  said Garry Cathell, Executive Director of the Big 33.
