If you review the “What We Believe” page on the Members 1st Federal Credit Union website, you’ll quickly realize that this company believes in maintaining strong community relationships through servant leadership. From countless hours of volunteer services by associates to generous corporate donations to local non-profits, Members 1st is dedicated to helping local Central Pennsylvania communities flourish. That same dedication is reflected in the company’s responsible financial stewardship of its members’ dollars. They deliver everything a member needs to live well financially and flourish as a family.

Their strong commitment to associates and the community contributes to the company’s continued growth, as shown by the recent opening of new corporate headquarters in Hampden Township, Cumberland County.

History

The NSD Mechanicsburg Federal Credit Union was founded in 1950 and started with nine employees at the Naval Supply Depot, known as the Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg. It was renamed Defense Activities Federal Credit Union in 1972 and rebranded again as Members 1st in 1994. As the company grew, it moved its headquarters to Trindle Road and then to the Rossmoyne Business Center but remained committed to staying in Central Pennsylvania.

Current Day

Plans were announced for a new corporate headquarters in February 2019 and Members 1st broke ground in August 2020. The new facility allowed the company to condense its corporate operations into one building. At over 170,000 square feet, the new building opened in April 2022 and currently provides open & collaborative office space for 600 employees.

And the building, with room for another 250 to 300 associates, clearly represents Members 1st commitment to remain in Cumberland County and grow its business through the help of its associates.

George Nahodil has been employed with Members 1st for 22 years and has served as CEO for five years. He oversaw the planning and construction of the new building and noted that remaining headquartered in Cumberland County was a priority. The location in Enola is right off I-81 and is “convenient for employees.” It is also located in an area that has seen substantial growth in the last several years, including the 300,000-square-foot Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center, which opened in late 2021.

Future Plans

Currently, Members 1st employs over 1,200 associates with a payroll of over $100 million. In addition, it has 65 branch offices in Central Pennsylvania and approximately $6.8 billion in assets. Mr. Nahodil notes that “growth is critical” for all businesses.

He attributes continued growth to the company’s commitment to its associates, members, and the community. He says that these “three legs drive each other.” Associates who work for Members 1st support the company’s commitment to the local community and must attend two community events each year.

This mindset serves the company well as it plans to branch into new markets. But, regardless of this growth, Members 1st intends to remain an integral part of Cumberland County. “This is our home, and it was important for us to stay here,” says Mr. Nahodil.

CAEDC appreciates the support of Members 1st as a Founders Level of our Cumberland Valley Alliance and looks forward to a continuing partnership that will help grow the economic future of Cumberland County and enhance the quality of life in the region.
